A Premeditated Burglary
I'm pleased to announce that last night's dream was about as kooky as it gets--considering the slew of random people from my past and odd series of events. The following is fiction, and is in no way a reflection on any of the people or businesses mentioned.
It all started when I rented a few videos from Blockbuster. As I paid for my movies, my home address popped up on the computer screen and the sales clerk memorized it. Thanks to a photographic memory, he instantly memorized my street, phone number, name, and face. Oblivious to this criminal, I snatched the movies and continued on my way home.
The details about the rest of my evening are hazy. Perhaps they weren't important.
But somehow, the clerk managed to get inside my house and steal ALL my clothes, jewelry, music, iPod and stuffed animals when I wasn't there. When I arrived home all of my possesions were missing, I was extremely upset and of course I had no idea the prepretator was the creepy clerk from blockbuster. Naturally, I called my mother, panicking (In real life, she's accustomed to panicky, fear-stricken phone calls from me). Next, I somehow remember driving all around town in a thundestorm, talking to her on the phone. My best guess is that I was trying to decide how to prosecute this crime. I remember I didn't want to get a lawyer, because I was afraid the perp. (whoever he was) would somehow hurt me.
Next I remember briefly being on the phone with my good friend, Katey who informed me she had several leads on the crime. She told me we should go undercover to his apartment, to see if we could somehow get back any or all of my stuff. Apparently, I agreed. In the next scene, Katey and I were quietly hunched down outside his apartment door. One of us decided to knock, and soon enough, I found myself inside his bedroom which was filled with thousands of CDs lining the walls, and perhaps most disturbing of all was seeing my favorite stuffed animal (a well worn and loved puppy), Puppers sitting on his bed. I felt pretty violated. I also recognized him as the clerk from blockbuster. (The clerk in my dream was actually played by this guy who used to work at Oxford Spirits and lived in my apartment building last summer. He was actually kind of attractive...not gonna lie here, friends. I got to know him last summer, and had fun having deep conversations with him after I'd return home from an evening out at the bar)
I remember the following dialogue: "Yeah, you're not the first and you're not the last," he told me looking around the room at all the material possesions. "I rob people who rent videos."
I nodded. Damnit! I thought. I wish I had a tape recorder. "Alright, look, can I just take my puppy and my iPod?"
"I guess, if you really need that stuff," he handed over my posessions.
I left, wishing I could have scooped up everything else and wondering how I would ever be able to get everything back. I left and showed Katey what I managed to fineagle back. She seemed pleased.
"Alright tim," she said. (Tim is a nickname we call our friends in real life) "I have to head home."
I'm assuming I lived alone in my dream, because for some reason I convinced her to spend the night. I was afraid something else would get stolen.
In the next scene, I was putting sheets on the guest bed when a bizarre bug that looked like a red spotted anteater crawled out from under the bed. It's nose was long and pointy, and had antennae twice as long. It stared at me. I next remember being accutely aware of how materialistic I am. I questioned whether it even made a difference that this guy stole so many things.
Then I woke up.
I think this dream has several different meanings. First, I clearly have some anxiety about living alone. I've always had this bizarre fear of having seemingly unimportant things stolen. (When I was little I was convinced someone was going to steal my Little Mermaid sheets. They were that special.) But I also think this dream perhaps indicates that I'm too invested in material things (ence, why the thought actually occured to me in my dream).
I'm open to any and all interpretations you have!
